Laughter Really is the Best Medicine…
I can’t believe it is already July. It feels like yesterday I was sitting in my living room trying to figure out what to write for June and miserably failing (hence why I took the month off). This month things are so much simpler; new music I am excited about is coming out and artists I hate are messing up. Musically speaking it is shaping up to be a great July.
However, when speaking of work, July is probably going to be a very difficult month for me. Yes the month starts with a long weekend, unfortunately that is the only break I will have until late August. I love what I do and I am paid quite a bit more than the average person my age for doing it – it’s just that once in a while I would like the opportunity to take a breather. That is all I need, really. I mean, everyday I come into the office, I sit down at my desk and do whatever it is I have to do that day, to the best of my ability. If I am bored, I don’t wince, cry or beg to do something else. If I am upset, I don’t shrug off my duties and pout. If I am tired, I drink caffeine infused beverages and fight my way through the day. In the end, I may not be paid anything close to what a recording artist makes, but that doesn’t stop me from doing the best work that I can. This leads me nicely into this month’s topic: 50 Cent.
Before I go on, let me reaffirm, I hate 50 Cent and the majority of G-Unit. I don’t really have anything against Young Buck or Lloyd Banks, I’m just not a huge fan. I’ll never buy their albums, but I don’t hate them. But 50? Oh I hate him with a passion. Well I did, and now he is just silly to me.
When popular singers are caught lip-syncing during live television performances it is usually forgivable. When performers are “singing live” on shows like Soul Train, it is understandable that they sync over a track of themselves. It isn’t an easy thing performing live; the audience usually wants to hear exactly what they have heard on the album. It is truly an example of some people being more equal than others. What I mean is that not all great singers are great performers and not all great performers are great singers.
However 50 Cent is on another level. Rap artists have enough trouble garnering credibility as legitimate artists without people like 50 coming long and setting them back 9 or 10 steps. It wasn’t enough to step onto the rap scene and talk about nothing; it wasn’t enough to step into the spotlight and glorify getting shot; it wasn’t enough to step out of obscurity and bring some of the least talented people to grace hip hop in years along for the ride. Nope, 50 had to go and get caught lip-syncing. Priceless. This honestly, is some of the best news I have received all year.
Some other really good news, T.I.P. is coming out with his latest album T.I. vs. T.I.P. on July 3rd. I am so very happy about this. Something about T.I.P. and his rapping style really entertains me. In the world of Hip Hop, T.I.P. is no Mos Def; but I am certain, just like King, this will be a very enjoyable album. So this July take 10 seconds out of your day and laugh at 50 Cent with me; and then take 10 minutes out of your day and pick up the latest T.I.P. album. Trust me; it’ll make for a great July.
Peace
